How often do I need to feed my tank inhabitants?
My tank is 4 month old with 34lbs of gulf live rock that grew in the Gulf of Mexico for years.
The inhabitants in my 32 gallon tank are 2 small clowns, 1 cleaner shrimp, 10 snails, 9 hermit crabs (blue leg and cortaz), 1 Long tentacle nem, 1 bubble tip nem.
I have been feeding the clowns every 3 days and the LTA when it looks hungry.

I feed my tank like 3x a day. If I don't, my nutrients will eventually bottom out, which is bad.

I would be comfortable saying that most people here feed their systems at least twice a day. Test your water, I bet you can afford to feed more frequently, water chemistry speaking- unless you're battling algae or cyano.

I feed my fish pellets in the morning and a heavy feeding of frozen food at night. My nems twice a week and my corals 3 times a week.

Fish and marine invertebrates are poikilotherms with very, very few exceptions. They do not expend energy maintaining their body temperature. Because of this fact, their NEED for food is far lower than mammals and birds. One feeding per day for most fish is plenty and most can easily get by with every other day or even less.

Some fish like dragonets feed on small stuff and feed almost constantly. Eating tiny prey means they need to eat far more often.

And grazers like tangs do better eating more often. Algae is far lower in food value *usually* than animal prey.

I feed my single clown up to 20 1 mm to pellets every day. Every three days is doable, but it's not really ideal. Marine animals don't have a need for large quantities of food everyday, but feeding that much, especially high quality foods, boosts their immune system, as well as gives you leeway, if you need to leave for a vacation or trip for 5-6 days. If you want to know how much your clowns can eat, set a timer for 3 minutes and put as much food in as you can one at a time and count how much they eat. If you have low nutrients the feed all of it everyday, but if you have relatively high nutrients, up your maintenance or feed half of that quantity per day. Don't quote me tho, this is just how I've had the best success in determining the right amount of food. Also toss in a little extra for the CUC and the shrimp.

Every 3 days? Do you find the food expensive or what is the goal ? Trying to keep nitrates and detritus to a minimum? No coral in the tank? Just wondering.
I have 2 clowns a firefish a possum wrasse and a fire shrimp and I feed frozen every day. I feed the shrimp a nice chunk of reef frenzy directly.

I'd be very curious to find out what the caloric needs of different species of fish commonly kept in the aquarium might be. I know damsels to be aggressive, opportunistic feeders, so perhaps a binge-fast cycle is common for them.

Most of my tanks have dwarf angels, and they tend to graze all day, which tends to suggest to me that they need frequent supplemental feedings of algae. My clipped nori squares certainly don't last more than a day.

I am impressed that you have live rock from the Gulf of Mexico. I have lived in Texas all my life and our beaches aren't the greatest. I was wondering how the rock looks and how you obtained it from the gulf

Im not sure the scientific/ researched needs of my fish are but i have 9 fish medium sized i would say from 2 inch - 5 inch but some will grow bigger,i generally feed 1 frozen cube at lunchtime ( 2x different half cubes together) then at tea time ( 5pm for who doesnt know tea time) i feed 1 clam about 1.5 inch and 2- 3 times a week i feed some algae sheets cut up in strips and stuck to side of tank.so far 5 different frozen foods ( but will gradually buy more) algae wafers/ algae sheets/ 1 mm pellets only feed occasionally and live food from lfs 2 x a week instead off the frozen to try give them variety off foods and fatten them up to be healthy as possible and as read such great reviews on culturing white worms to feed the fish ( its like £ 5.99 so peanuts) but not got around to this yet but sometime in near futureci hope i will start one.
Nutrients seem to be in check and cuc im replinishing/ adding as needed and everything working ok so far but little but often is my motto for myself and my fish ( well trying my best ha ha )

2-3 small feedings are sufficient feeding what can be consumed in 1-2 minutes.
Its Easier to Add food that to remove it

Twice daily plus treats (for my benefit more than theirs) and algae sheets twice weekly.

Wow. Glad someone doesn't feed me every three days. I broadcast feed twice a day just for the fish, then target feed coral twice a week. Also put in BBS and rotifers periodically.

Well, it depends on your tank . If you are running a tank on water changes only then once every2 to 3 days to keep your nutrients down. But if you have a skimmer you can feed alittle more. If you have a refugium now you are putting food in the tank with out putting food in, pods and stuff. If you have a algae turf scubber now you have to feed good to keep nutrients up
It is so good at removing phosphates and nitrates that you have to feed alot just to have some nutrients .

One of my pet peeves in the hobby is the philosophy of restricting feeding to the fish to control PO4 and NO3. Feed your animals appropriately, and fix your filtration to control NO3 and PO4 if it's insufficient. If you aren't going to feed right, you probably should find another hobby. Out on a reef, fish have opportunities for a meal all day long.

I feed once a day homemade frozen mix, and also supplemental Nori and Dulse....my filtration is well seasoned live rock and my fish pick at it all day long, I'm assuming they get a fair amount of nutrition from it as they are 'fat' and several over 18 years old. Nitrates and Phos are fine, pretty much always. Maybe I'm a pet peeve, not sure lol...

I do the same with mine. Lol. I use a small syringe and he comes up directly and eats from it. Lol. As well as I feed my torch, brain, and acan frag directly every day. Their growth has exploded. I use a mix of frozen mysis pelets and a few flakes all mixed together.

Exactly because unless you have a license to obtain the rock it is illegal to remove rock from the waters in Florida. I know for I tried and all I took was one little rock and the game warden almost took me to jail but because I did not know and put the rock back I was given a warning. So when I got home I checked it out and in order to remove rock from the gulf you need to obtain a license and then you are limited as to how much you can take.

5 fish get fed once a day, I feed home made frozen, spirulina brine and pellets on occasion. I always have a 1/4 sheet of nori in the tank from 10am to 7pm for the tangs. I used to feed a full sheet of nori and they would consume it but as the tank matured they have taken to eating off of the rocks more so the smaller nori is enough.

I feed my fish 2x a day. Either frozen or dry food - usually varies from day to day.
