My tank is 4 month old with 34lbs of gulf live rock that grew in the Gulf of Mexico for years.
The inhabitants in my 32 gallon tank are 2 small clowns, 1 cleaner shrimp, 10 snails, 9 hermit crabs (blue leg and cortaz), 1 Long tentacle nem, 1 bubble tip nem.
I have been feeding the clowns every 3 days and the LTA when it looks hungry.

I would be comfortable saying that most people here feed their systems at least twice a day. Test your water, I bet you can afford to feed more frequently, water chemistry speaking- unless you're battling algae or cyano.

Some fish like dragonets feed on small stuff and feed almost constantly. Eating tiny prey means they need to eat far more often.
And grazers like tangs do better eating more often. Algae is far lower in food value *usually* than animal prey.

How often do I need to feed my tank inhabitants?

I feed my single clown up to 20 1 mm to pellets every day. Every three days is doable, but it's not really ideal. Marine animals don't have a need for large quantities of food everyday, but feeding that much, especially high quality foods, boosts their immune system, as well as gives you leeway, if you need to leave for a vacation or trip for 5-6 days. If you want to know how much your clowns can eat, set a timer for 3 minutes and put as much food in as you can one at a time and count how much they eat. If you have low nutrients the feed all of it everyday, but if you have relatively high nutrients, up your maintenance or feed half of that quantity per day. Don't quote me tho, this is just how I've had the best success in determining the right amount of food. Also toss in a little extra for the CUC and the shrimp.

Every 3 days? Do you find the food expensive or what is the goal ? Trying to keep nitrates and detritus to a minimum? No coral in the tank? Just wondering. How often do I need to feed my tank inhabitants?

I have 2 clowns a firefish a possum wrasse and a fire shrimp and I feed frozen every day. I feed the shrimp a nice chunk of reef frenzy directly.

Most of my tanks have dwarf angels, and they tend to graze all day, which tends to suggest to me that they need frequent supplemental feedings of algae. My clipped nori squares certainly don't last more than a day.

I am impressed that you have live rock from the Gulf of Mexico. I have lived in Texas all my life and our beaches aren't the greatest. I was wondering how the rock looks and how you obtained it from the gulfHow often do I need to feed my tank inhabitants?

It is so good at removing phosphates and nitrates that you have to feed alot just to have some nutrients .

I feed once a day homemade frozen mix, and also supplemental Nori and Dulse....my filtration is well seasoned live rock and my fish pick at it all day long, I'm assuming they get a fair amount of nutrition from it as they are 'fat' and several over 18 years old. Nitrates and Phos are fine, pretty much always. Maybe I'm a pet peeve, not sure lol...One of my pet peeves in the hobby is the philosophy of restricting feeding to the fish to control PO4 and NO3. Feed your animals appropriately, and fix your filtration to control NO3 and PO4 if it's insufficient. If you aren't going to feed right, you probably should find another hobby. Out on a reef, fish have opportunities for a meal all day long.

I do the same with mine. Lol. I use a small syringe and he comes up directly and eats from it. Lol. As well as I feed my torch, brain, and acan frag directly every day. Their growth has exploded. I use a mix of frozen mysis pelets and a few flakes all mixed together.Every 3 days? Do you find the food expensive or what is the goal ? Trying to keep nitrates and detritus to a minimum? No coral in the tank? Just wondering.

Exactly because unless you have a license to obtain the rock it is illegal to remove rock from the waters in Florida. I know for I tried and all I took was one little rock and the game warden almost took me to jail but because I did not know and put the rock back I was given a warning. So when I got home I checked it out and in order to remove rock from the gulf you need to obtain a license and then you are limited as to how much you can take.I am impressed that you have live rock from the Gulf of Mexico.
